The experience of starting school for the first time can sometimes be associated with a mixture of emotions –some happy, some sad, so EducationCity.com have come up with some handy tips to help you and your children get ready for the big day:
- Be Prepared – Start introducing a timetable of getting up, mealtimes, bedtimes etc, in the week before children start school.
- Visit the New School – Children are often invited to visit the school before starting. This gives them the opportunity to meet the teacher and other children in their class.
- Practise Getting Dressed – This will help children put their clothes on in the right order in the mornings and also help when getting changed for PE.
- Label Clothing – Check your children’s clothes have name labels in them so they don’t get lost.
- Eat a Healthy Breakfast – Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and should be nutritious and filling.
- Practise the School Run – Learn the route to school, so you can get there on time. This also allows time for children to meet new friends.
- Reassure Your Child – Children will be anxious and will want to talk about how they are feeling. Listen to your child, and share your own happy experiences of when you started school.
- Dinnertime – Let your child know if they are to have school dinners or packed lunches. Let your child help you pack their lunch box, and maybe allow them to choose what goes in (within reason!).
- Activities – Ask the teacher what they will be doing on their first day, and discuss this with your children, so that they know what to expect.
- After school – Let your children and the teacher know who will be collecting them from school or if they are going to an after school club.
