EDUCATIONCITY.COM BOOSTS SPELLING AGE
Our Lady of the Missions Primary School in Thornliebank, East Renfrewshire is enjoying some well earned success in their Support for Learning Dept. having used EducationCity.com to improve their children’s spelling age by 14 months, and as much as 3 years in one instance. The school subscribed to EducationCity.com in September 2006, having seen the resource at the SETT Show in Glasgow and being encouraged by their Quality Development Officer to take up the offer of a free trial. |

Upon subscription, Fiona Lyon of the Support for Learning Dept. embarked on a test programme to improve the spelling skills of the school’s poorest spellers, many of whom had additional support needs. Involving the use of myCity to personalise the learning to individual pupils’ needs, Fiona met with the pupil groups twice a week to use the activities, taking them out of their normal classes for thirty minutes.
The results proved impressive academically:
Primary 4 10% improvement
Primary 5 11% improvement
Primary 6 12% improvement
Primary 7 14% improvement
And the positive impact extended beyond the purely academic: “EducationCity.com also boosts the children’s motivation and self-esteem, so much so that they really look forward to their special classes”, explains Fiona. “As you can imagine, we are absolutely delighted and will definitely be continuing to use EducationCity.com in this targeted way with our pupils into the future.”
